CEE Seminar: Dr. Geoffrey Rodgers, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of Canterbury, NZ Seminar title: Next Generation Structural Technologies: Reducing the Impact of Seismic Events on a Society Abstract The 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand was an unexpected and powerful event that severely damaged much of the infrastructure in the city. A substantial number (over 80%) of the buildings within the main business district have subsequently been demolished as a result of damage suffered through the sacrificial structural design approach. A new generation of structures are being constructed in that city, and some of these take advantage of newly developed devices that can dissipate the energy in a structure to minimize damage and mitigate the hazard. This talk will discuss the research development, experimental validation and field deployment of one such device.
