Presenter

Jim Papadopoulos PhD, PE, Chief Engineer, T-Omega Wind, Inc.

Strong ocean winds offer an attractive clean energy option. But current technology simply places a conventional (onshore style) wind turbine on a massive floating oil-platform structure. This approach uses about ten times the minimum needed mass, requires huge port, ship, and supply chain investments, and results in uncompetitive electricity and stringent depth limits. The speaker's company, T-Omega Wind, has rethought the entire floating wind turbine system in order to reduce overall cost, ease manufacturing/installation/repair, and eliminate infrastructure needs. After describing this innovative technology (along with its validation and potential), he will offer some observations about technological disruption in the energy infrastructure space.
