CEE Seminar: Professor David T. Ma, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering Seminar Title: Harvesting Mechanical Energy from the Environment - Opportunities and Challenges Abstract This talk focuses on the development of vibratory energy harvesting technology. An overview of methods of harvesting energy from ambient vibrations is presented. The limitations of traditional methods and some recently proposed new concepts based on nonlinear oscillators are discussed. Results from numerical and experimental studies suggest that there is an inherent limitation on the commonly accepted passive methodology. A paradigm shift may be necessary to bring this field to a new level that will enable self-powerness in various sensors and sensor networks.
